June 3, 2004 -- Intel Corporation expects revenue for the second quarter to between $8.0 billion and $8.2 billion, as compared to the previous range of $7.6 billion to $8.2 billion. The gross margin percentage is expected to be between 60 percent and 61 percent, as compared to the previous expectation of 60 percent, plus or minus a couple of points.

( o ancora peggio, se INTC aprisse in gap down sotto tale livello)
lo scenario di breve si deteriorerebbe soprattutto per l'incrocio al ribasso di medie "lente" . Un esempio visivo :

Banc of America projected solid second half demand for chips produced by Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people ) and Advanced Micro Devices (nyse: AMD - news - people ), citing the research firm's own forecast for strong growth in the personal computer market during that period. Banc of America said it projects year-over-year second half end market growth of 7.6% in the desktop segment and of 27.2% in the notebook sector. As to the current second quarter, the research house expects a "normal" seasonal decline in the desktop personal computer end market to impact semiconductor makers. Banc of America said its own recent checks in Taiwanese manufacturers indicate results in the month of May came in below the research firm's prior estimate.

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Lehman Bros. analyst Tim Luke shaved his third-quarter and 2004 earnings estimates for Intel (INTC: news, chart, profile) due to concerns that PC demand was "subdued" ahead of the important back-to-school selling season. He cut his second-quarter earnings forecast to 30 cents a share from 31 cents and his 2004 estimate to $1.18 a share from $1.20. For 2005, he cut his forecast to $1.37 a share from $1.40. Luke trimmed his stock price target to $33 from $35, but kept his rating at "overweight." The chip sector bellwether's stock, a component of the Dow industrials, was last trading down 16 cents, or 0.6 percent, at $26.17.

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Wedbush Morgan believes Intel (INTC: news, chart, profile) will ease investor worries when it reports second-quarter results on July 13 by projecting a "normal seasonal" third quarter. The chip sector bellwether was last trading up 0.9 percent at $26.34, after sliding 5.4 percent over the prior three sessions. Analyst David Wu said investors had become concerned after "a few of our competitors raised the possibility of below seasonal revenue guidance." He actually believes the back-to-school season will be "above normal," as increased corporate spending on information technology lifts results in the second half of the year. Wu currently forecasts earnings of 33 cents a share and revenue of $8.95 billion for Intel's third quarter, vs. the average analyst estimates compiled by Thomson First Call for earnings of 31 cents a share and revenue of $8.74 revenue.

NEW YORK, July 12 (New Ratings) – Analysts at Merrill Lynch downgrade the global semiconductor sector from "overweight" to "underweight."


In a research note published this morning, the analysts mention that the current valuations of global semiconductor stocks have significant downside risks, despite the recent weakness in their share prices. Merrill Lynch believes that the semiconductor industry is approaching its peak earnings and margin levels significantly ahead of the previous assumptions. The analysts have reduced their year-over-year sector revenue growth forecast for 2005 from 16% to 6%

Io adesso vorrei capire come fa Merril Lynch a downgradare i produttori di chip quando Philips cresce e prevede di crescere ancora sul segmento semiconduttori. O è brava solo la Philips, o a Merrill sono degli incapaci oppure c'è qualcosa che non mi quadra ... comunque lo vedremo stasera con INTC.

LONDON (CBS.MW) -- Philips Electronics (PHG: news, chart, profile) (NL:00953: news, chart, profile) on Tuesday said second quarter net income jumped to 616 million euros, from 42 million in the year-ago quarter as its chip division returned to profitability and unconsolidated companies boosted profits. That trumped net profit estimates between 485 million and 580 million euros, according to an AFX News poll. The Dutch consumer electronics group said sales improved 11 percent to 7.28 billion euros, with its chip division showed 28 percent comparable growth from mobile communications, and its Consumer Electronics division reporting 19 percent comparable growth on Connected Displays and Mobile Infotainment. Unconsolidated companies, such as its LG Philips LCD display division and InterTrust Technologies, contributed 430 million euros of profits vs. 108 million a year ago. It added it is confident in revenue and earnings growth in the second half, due to innovation pipeline, a well-filled order book and a reduced cost structure.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Can Intel be the cure for the market's summertime blues?
The world's largest chipmaker is set to report second-quarter results after the closing bell Tuesday. The numbers should be solid: analysts expect profits to soar 91 percent to 27 cents a share on a 19 percent increase in sales, to $8.1 billion.

But several analysts have downgraded Intel and other semiconductor companies recently because of a concern that tech spending will disappoint. A wave of earnings warnings last week from software developers and a couple of smaller chip firms contributed to that fear.

In addition, Intel has had some high profile problems with its latest chip for personal computers, known as Grantsdale. The company announced a recall of some Grantsdale chips in late June.

As a result, shares of Intel (INTC: Research, Estimates) have fallen more than 6 percent so far in July and nearly 20 percent this year. Still, the stock more than doubled in 2003 so a pullback in 2004 should not be a major surprise.

So is there more downside for Intel, and the rest of tech for that matter, or will second-quarter reports spark another rally?
