Intel (INTC:Nasdaq - commentary - research) traded higher in a down market Wednesday after J.P. Morgan published a bullish note on the microprocessor giant's mid-quarter update Thursday. The brokerage believes Intel will raise the low end of its first-quarter revenue range from $8.8 billion to $9.0 billion, implying a midpoint of $9.2 billion. The Thomson First Call consensus is $9.15 billion. J.P. Morgan said Intel's laptop chips should sell well in the quarter and said flash memory prices have leveled off. The stock added 10 cents to $24.90.

http://www.borsainside.com/mercati_usa/usa...tel_update.shtm

Intel's Q1 outlook fails to excite

By Matt Andrejczak, MarketWatch
Last Update: 4:25 PM ET March 11, 2005

Shares of Intel (INTC) fell 65 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $24.20, helping take the chip sector lower. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index ($SOX) dropped 2.9 percent to 427.88.

Intel's higher sales guidance was anticipated by Wall Street ahead of the Thursday's mid-quarter update. "We remind investors that Intel's original guidance was conservative," Smith Barney analyst Glen Yeung wrote Friday in a research note.

Late Thursday, Intel forecast sales in a range between $9.2 billion and $9.4 billion, compared to the previous range of $8.8 billion to $9.4 billion.

If the firm hits the midpoint of that range, or $9.3 billion, it will post sales growth of 15 percent from the same period a year ago. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call expected sales of $9.15 billion, a 13 percent jump.

Although it didn't issue a profit forecast, the higher sales and margin guidance suggests Intel's first-quarter earnings will at least meet or perhaps beat Wall Street expectations of 28 cents a share, or 8 percent profit growth.

Before the update, Intel shares had risen 6 percent this year, compared to a nearly-6 percent decline in the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index. That suggests investors had already factored in news of better-than-expected first-quarter results.

Real demand or inventory build?

Analysts for Morgan Stanley said some of the demand that Intel is seeing may be from a potential buildup of inventory at its distributors and not from consumer demand for PC's.

In its update, Intel also lifted its target for gross margin, or the percent of revenue left after deducting manufacturing costs, to 57 percent of sales, up from the 55 percent it had forecast in January. That means Intel is running its factories more efficiently. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based tech bellwether said all other expectations are unchanged.

However, looking toward the second quarter Merrill Lynch analysts told clients they sees gross margin declining as revenue falls seasonally and startup costs rise again.

"Like many of the companies in our space, Intel has managed to beat low first-quarter expectations. However, hitting full-year targets will be tougher, especially at the gross margin level," Merrill said.

Sales of the company's Centrino chips used in laptops are doing so well that Intel is scrambling to meet demand, according to Chief Financial Officer Andy Bryant.

Intel's chips power most of the world's personal computers and a growing percentage of Internet servers used by corporations, so its results are a bellwether for tech demand. The bullish sales forecast is therefore a positive sign for makers of desktops, laptops and related electronic gear.

Inventories and gross margin

Intel attributed the higher gross margin forecast to lower startup costs for chips it makes using a new technology. That technology lets Intel squeeze more chips out of the each sheet of silicon wafers from which they're cut.

In January, Intel said it had worked through most of its excess inventory but warned that some of its distributors may not have done so. It cut its inventory more sharply than expected in the fourth-quarter. Now, Intel's days of inventory are roughly 8 percent lower than its historical average, according to J.P. Morgan.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Advanced Micro Devices is expected to report a lower first-quarter profit after the market closes Wednesday, when investors will focus on the performance of its struggling unit that makes memory chips.

AMD, the No. 2 U.S. maker of chips used in personal computers behind Intel Corp., is expected to earn 2 cents a share on sales of $1.21 billion, according to a survey of analysts by Thomson First Call. A year ago, the firm earned 12 cents a share on sales of $1.24 billion.

Investors are anxious to hear what strides the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company has made with its flash memory business, which makes chips used in cell phones and other electronic gear. That unit is burdened by weak prices caused by oversupply and increased competition from Intel.

"AMD is an ugly spot," with its flash memory business, said Paul Williams, editor of NextInninng.com, a technology newsletter.

In the fourth-quarter, AMD's flash memory unit swung to a loss of $39 million compared with a profit of $15 million in the year-ago quarter. Sales fell 11 percent to $504 million. The business started to get bumpy in the second half of last year.

Analysts say it will be harder for AMD to sustain further losses in that business because, at 43 percent of 2004 sales, it is a much bigger piece of its revenue than at Intel, where flash memory sales generate just 7 percent of total revenue.

"Investors want it out of the income statement," said Rick Whittington, an analyst at Caris & Company.

Last year, AMD and Intel each generated about $2.3 billion in flash memory sales. The companies are the biggest makers of the type of memory chips used in mobile phones and DVD players. The chips retain information even when the power is turned off.

Pricing for these chips does not appear to be stabilizing anytime soon, W.R. Hambrecht analyst Daniel Amir wrote in a report to clients. He estimates year-over-year declines of 4 percent for the first quarter due to oversupply driving down average selling prices.

Flash memory is only one side of AMD's business. Sales of its chips used in PC's are holding up, although not expected to grow quarter-over-quarter. The company has said sales should match or be slightly down from last year's quarter, when the PC unit generated revenue of $571 million and an operating profit of $67 million.

AMD shares have fallen more than 20 percent this year, while Intel is down just 2 percent. In late morning trading Wednesday, AMD (AMD: news, chart, profile) shares rose 16 cents to $17.39.

Ieri Intel si è preso un upgrade a hold e oggi Texas va come un treno, fusse ca fusse che ci abbiamo beccato e che la riscossa partirà proprio dai semiconduttori ?

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Intel Corp., the world's largest chip maker, Tuesday reported a rise in quarterly profit as revenue reached the second-highest level in the company's history, helped by strong demand for its Centrino notebook computer chips.

The news sent Intel (Research) stock up 3.6 percent in after-hours trading after a 1.9 percent rise on Nasdaq ahead of the report.

Net income in the first quarter ended April 2 rose to $2.2 billion, or 34 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier profit of $1.7 billion, or 26 cents a share. Sales rose to $9.4 billion from $8.1 billion, slightly below the all-time company record of $9.6 billion set in the fourth quarter of 2004.

The results from the Santa Clara, California-based company topped the average Wall Street expectation of a profit of 31 cents a share on sales of $9.31 billion, according to a poll of analysts by Reuters Estimates.

Intel said it expected revenue in the second quarter to be in a range of $8.6 billion to $9.2 billion, in line with the average analyst expectation of $8.9 billion. Gross profit margin, the percentage of sales left over after accounting for production costs, was forecast to be about 56 percent, plus or minus a couple of points.

The first-quarter report came in at the top end of an upbeat financial forecast Intel gave on March 10. At the time, Chief Financial Officer Andy Bryant bumped up the company's revenue and profitability targets after Intel's manufacturing plants scrambled to meet demand for notebook computer chips.

Helped by the popularity of its Centrino brand of chips for notebook PCs, Intel's share of the market for PC microprocessors rose by about 1 percentage point last year to 81.5 percent, while rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. saw its share slip by about a point to around 16 percent.

At the same time, the chip maker faces several challenges, including AMD's Opteron chip for business computers, a recent reorganization of the company, and an upcoming transition to a new chief executive officer.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Lehman Bros. raised its stock price target for Intel Corp. to $30 from $28, and increased its earnings and revenue forecasts, on an improved gross margin outlook. Analyst Tim Luke lifted his second-quarter earnings estimate to 28 cents a share from 27 cents and his revenue forecast to $9 billion from $8.9 billion. Luke now projects 2005 earnings of $1.36 a share and 2006 earnings of $1.48 a share, vs. prior estimates of $1.32 and $1.44 a share, respectively. He reiterated the overweight rating. "We conclude that after some stumbles in 2004, just as Advanced Micro Devices appeared to be undergoing resurgence, Intel now appears to be navigating the [institutional] transitions with solid and potentially increasing momentum," Luke said.

Intel protegge i file a livello hardware

Will Intel open Pandora's Box with Mac Mini twin?

Published: May 31, 2005, 11:08 AM PDT
By Michael Singer
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

Taking a second crack at the living room, Intel today showed off a concept PC that closely resembles Apple Computer's Mac Mini. The chipmaker unveiled the prototype with AOpen at the Computex trade show in Taiwan.

The square-shaped metallic box, called Pandora, is similar to one revealed by the chipmaking giant at its Intel Developers Forum in March.

How or when consumers might see Pandora systems is uncertain. Intel often contracts with smaller PC manufacturers to establish prototypes and reference designs. Sometimes the designs succeed--often they don't get much farther than trade shows. Taiwan-based AOpen, an affiliate of PC maker Acer Group, mostly serves as a contract manufacturer for other companies, although it will sell Pandora systems starting around September, according to PC enthusiast site Silent PC Review.

Still, the new design lets Intel take another run at the entertainment PC, or EPC, heralded at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2004. The first generation didn't sell well. So this year, Don MacDonald, a vice president with Intel's home product group, has said that future living room units will be smaller, more stylish and likely less costly. Analysts have said Intel will need to keep production and software bundle costs down if it is to compete with Apple's $499 box.
Via's laptop chip

According to Silent PC Review, AOpen's Pandora device has a slot load CD disk drive and power button in the front with three USB ports, a keyboard hookup and a serial port in the back for hooking into displays. The computer also has internal wireless networking connectors and uses a single blower fan to keep it cool.

AOpen is best known for its bare-bones tower systems, but it also makes smaller desktops, including a cube-shaped product family called XC Cube.

The computer maker also announced a partnership with Intel on the ATX Pentium M i915Ga-HFS. The hybrid motherboard is based on a socket 479 Pentium M (Dothan) CPU, Intel's 915G desktop chipset and ICH6 I/O controller. The motherboard is a likely candidate for the Pandora product line, AOpen said.

AOpen also said it is making PC motherboards based on Intel's latest Pentium D processors with 945G and 945P chipsets. The two motherboards are AOpen's first to support dual-core CPUs. Both motherboards can be installed with Pentium 4 processors with a front side bus running at 1066/800/533MHz.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 2005--Intel Corporation today announced second-quarter revenue of $9.2 billion, up 15 percent year-over-year and down 2 percent sequentially.
Second-quarter net income was $2 billion, up 16 percent year-over-year and down 6 percent sequentially. Earnings per share were 33 cents, up 22 percent from 27 cents in the second quarter of 2004 and down 6 percent from 35 cents in the first quarter of 2005.

"Intel delivered record second-quarter revenue, with growth of 15 percent versus a year ago led by strong demand for our notebook platforms," said Paul Otellini, president and CEO. "Our investments in new products, advanced silicon capacity and emerging markets are paying off with growth that is outpacing the industry. We look forward to the second half of 2005 as we ramp dual-core microprocessors into high volume, begin production on our 65nm process technology and deliver innovative new platforms."

Intel's results for the previous quarter included an additional week of business because 2005 is a 53-week fiscal year for the company. As discussed in the company's June 9 Mid-Quarter Business Update, Intel's results for the second-quarter included a tax adjustment primarily related to an increase in estimated research and development credits for prior years.

The reversal of previously accrued taxes increased second-quarter earnings-per-share by approximately 2 cents. Intel's results for last year's second quarter included a reversal of previously accrued taxes that increased earnings-per-share by 1.3 cents.

BUSINESS OUTLOOK

The following statements are based on current expectations. These statements are forward-looking, and actual results may differ materially. Please see the Risk Factors Regarding Forward-Looking Statements in this release for a description of certain important risk factors that could cause actual results to differ, and refer to Intel's annual and quarterly reports on file with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a more complete description of the risks. These statements do not include the potential impact of any mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, investments or other business combinations that may be completed after July 18, 2005.

Revenue in the third quarter is expected to be between $9.6 billion and $10.2 billion.
Gross margin percentage for the third quarter is expected to be approximately 60 percent, plus or minus a couple of points, as compared to 56.4 percent in the second quarter. The gross margin percentage expectation for 2005 has been narrowed from 59 percent, plus or minus a few points, to 59 percent, plus or minus a couple of points. The gross margin percentage could vary from expectations based on changes in revenue levels, product mix and pricing; variations in inventory valuation, including variations related to the timing of qualifying products for sale; excess or obsolete inventory; manufacturing yields; changes in unit costs; capacity utilization; impairments of long-lived assets, including manufacturing, assembly/test and intangible assets; and the timing and execution of the manufacturing ramp and associated costs, including start-up costs.
Expenses (R&D plus MG&A) in the third quarter are expected to be between $2.8 billion and $2.9 billion, higher than $2.5 billion in the second quarter, primarily driven by increases in research and development. The company is transferring resources from 65nm start-up programs to 45nm development and increasing investments in new platforms. Expenses, particularly certain marketing and compensation expenses, vary depending on the level of demand for Intel's products and the level of revenue and profits.
The R&D spending expectation for 2005 is unchanged at approximately $5.2 billion.
The capital spending expectation for 2005 has been increased to approximately $5.9 billion, plus or minus $200 million, as compared to the previous expectation of $5.4 billion to $5.8 billion, to support higher expected demand.
Gains from equity investments and interest and other in the third quarter are expected to be approximately $130 million.
The tax rate for the third and fourth quarters is expected to be approximately 30.5 percent. The tax rate expectation does not reflect the impact of any potential repatriation of cash under the American Jobs Creation Act (Jobs Act). The company currently expects to finalize its analysis of whether, and to what extent, foreign earnings might be repatriated under the Jobs Act in September, which would impact the third quarter tax rate. The tax rate expectation is based on current tax law and current expected income and assumes Intel continues to receive tax benefits for export sales. The tax rate may be affected by the closing of acquisitions or divestitures; the jurisdiction in which profits are determined to be earned and taxed; changes in the estimates of credits, benefits and deductions; the resolution of issues arising from tax audits with various tax authorities; and the ability to realize deferred tax assets.
Depreciation for the third quarter is expected to be between $1 billion and $1.1 billion, approximately flat with the second quarter. Depreciation for 2005 is now expected to be between $4.3 billion and $4.4 billion, as compared to the previous expectation of $4.4 billion, plus or minus $100 million.
Amortization of acquisition-related intangibles and costs is expected to be approximately $30 million in the third quarter. The full-year expectation is now approximately $120 million, slightly below the previous expectation of $125 million.
SECOND-QUARTER REVIEW AND RECENT HIGHLIGHTS

Financial Review

Intel used $2.5 billion in cash to repurchase 98.9 million shares of its common stock during the quarter under an ongoing program.
The company paid a cash dividend of 8 cents per share on June 1 to stockholders of record on May 7.
Gains from equity investments and interest and other in the second quarter were $105 million. The amount included $22 million in net losses from equity investments driven by $133 million in impairments, primarily due to a $105-million impairment of Intel's investment in Micron Technology to reflect the difference between the cost basis of the investment and the stock price at the end of the quarter. The impairments were partially offset by gains from dispositions.
In June 2005, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service proposed certain adjustments related to the amounts reflected as a tax benefit for export sales in Intel's 2001 and 2002 tax returns. The company does not agree with these adjustments and is in the process of appealing similar adjustments with respect to Intel's 1999 and 2000 tax returns (see Intel's SEC filing on Form 10-Q for the quarter ended April 2, 2005). If the IRS were to prevail with respect to the 2001 and 2002 proposed adjustments, Intel's federal income tax due for these years would increase by approximately $400 million, plus interest.
