Potash Shares Fell Too Far, Morgan Stanley Says
Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- A meltdown in fertilizer stocks such as Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc., the world's largest producer of the crop nutrient, has gone too far, says Morgan Stanley & Co. analyst Vincent Andrews.
``A global economic slowdown is unlikely to affect fertilizer demand,'' Andrews said yesterday in a note to clients. ``The industry will remain extremely cash generative at fertilizer prices anywhere near current levels.''
The CHART OF THE DAY compares Potash's decline in New York Stock Exchange composite trading since its June 17 closing high with analysts' average estimates for the company's earnings per share in the next four quarters.
The chart shows Andrews isn't alone among analysts convinced Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based Potash and peers will continue to benefit from record fertilizer prices. Of 17 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg, 12 recommend buying Potash shares, and the remainder say to hold the stock.
Demand and prices for potash, phosphates and nitrogen-based fertilizers have gained as farmers sought to exploit record prices for corn, wheat, soybeans and rice and replenish global food inventories. Demand for crop nutrients also has risen because of increased production of ethanol and other renewable fuels made from crops.
Andrews initiated coverage of fertilizer stocks yesterday and rates Potash, Mosaic Co. and Agrium Inc. ``overweight.'' CF Industries Inc. and Intrepid Potash Inc. were rated ``equal- weight.''
