McDonald's cites 'strong' comparable sales growth (MCD) By Steve Gelsi
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- McDonald's Corp. (MCD) on Wednesday said it expects third-quarter earnings per share of about 61 cents, including a tax benefit of 7 cents per share. A survey of analysts by Thomson First Call is forecasting earnings of 49 cents per share for McDonald's. The component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJ) cited 'strong' global comparable sales growth. The fast food giant reported an 11.4 percent increase in September sales and a rise of 10.1 percent for the quarter. U.S. comparable sales were up 10.6 percent for the month, 8.5 percent for the quarter. Shares fell 13 cents to $27.55 on Tuesday.

Entertainment sector undervalued by 25%: Morgan Stanley By Susan Lerner
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Morgan Stanley on Tuesday boosted its recommendation on the entertainment industry to "attractive," telling clients it believes the sector is undervalued by some 25 percent. "Over the past 12 months, the Street and buy-side have become more realistic with respect to their growth expectations. However, we estimate if the companies simply meet our forecasts then only about one-third of the upside to our targets will be attained," analyst Richard Bilotti wrote in a research note. He thinks earnings and free cash flow should grow 10 to 12 percent over the next five years. Even more important, he said, is the shift towards returning capital to shareholders. He expects payout ratios will increase for all the companies. "Viacom (VIA.B: news, chart, profile), Disney (DIS: news, chart, profile) and Time Warner (TWX: news, chart, profile) will likely use a combination of share repurchases and dividends. We believe that News Corp. (NWS: news, chart, profile) will buy in its remaining minority interests over time," Bilotti said.

UPDATE 1-Cree posts higher 4th-qtr profit, offers outlook

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Semiconductor maker Cree Inc. Tuesday said quarterly profit surged 84 percent on increased demand for its light-emitting diode products.

Durham, North Carolina-based Cree's net profit rose to $21 million, or 28 cents per share, for the fiscal fourth quarter ended June 27, from $11.4 million, or 15 cents per share a year earlier.

Revenue jumped 42 percent to $90.9 million from $64.1 million.

Analysts, on average, forecast earnings of 23 cents per share on revenue of $86.9 million, according to Reuters Estimates.

The company said the revenue gain was fueled by "very strong" LED chip demand and said earnings were driven by lower LED unit costs. Cree customers use its materials to make dashboard lights, market tickers and video screens.

Cree forecast fiscal 2005 first-quarter earnings of 26 cents to 28 cents per share on revenue of $95 million to $97 million. Analysts expect profit of 23 cents on revenue of $90.8 million, according to Reuters Estimates.

3M Reports Higher Third-Quarter Sales and Earnings; Company Meets Third-Quarter Earnings Guidance of $0.97 Per Share
10/18/2004 -

ST. PAUL, Minn., Oct 18, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- 3M [MMM] today announced its third-quarter 2004 sales and earnings results.

The company reported net income of $775 million, or $0.97 per share, versus $663 million, or $0.83 per share, in the third quarter of 2003. Net income and earnings per share increased by nearly 17 percent.

"Broad-based growth among many of our businesses and continued productivity improvement generated another excellent earnings result," said W. James McNerney, Jr., 3M chairman and CEO. "Our employees around the world are driving growth through initiatives like 3M Acceleration and customer-focused Six Sigma projects, and we continue to execute on our aggressive operational goals."

Third-quarter worldwide net sales totaled $4.969 billion, up 7.6 percent compared to the third quarter of 2003. Global sales volumes increased 5.6 percent. Local-currency sales (which excludes the impact of currency translation on sales) increased 10.5 percent in Industrial; 7.7 percent in Consumer and Office; 6.6 percent in Display and Graphics; 6.4 percent in Safety, Security and Protection Services; 3.7 percent in Transportation; 1.5 percent in Electro and Communications; and declined 0.8 percent in Health Care. Currency effects increased sales by 2.5 percent and selling prices declined .5 percent.

Sales outside the United States totaled $2.91 billion, an increase of 10.8 percent versus the third quarter of 2003. Volumes increased 7.5 percent, while selling prices declined 1.1 percent. Currency translation effects increased international sales by 4.4 percent. Local-currency sales increased 12.2 percent in Asia Pacific, 8.4 percent in the combined Latin America, Africa and Canada region, and declined 0.3 percent in Europe.

In the United States, sales totaled $2.06 billion, up 3.5 percent from the third quarter of 2003. Volumes increased 3.2 percent, and selling prices increased by 0.3 percent.

3M's strong balance sheet and cash flow enabled the company to make special contributions of $455 million to its global pension plans in the third quarter as part of a multiyear plan to improve overall pension funding levels.

"We are optimistic about the strength of our diverse business and technology portfolio, but remain cautious on the global economy." McNerney said. "We have achieved strong earnings, cash flow and economic profit growth in 2004 despite increasing raw material price pressure, and are confident in our ability to leverage our corporate initiatives to drive sustainable revenue growth and operational excellence in the future."

3M also provided guidance on its earnings outlook for the remainder of 2004. The company expects fourth-quarter earnings of $0.90 to $0.91 per share, excluding the potential one-time impact of pending legislation to encourage the reinvestment of foreign earnings in the United States and the impact of an anticipated change in an accounting rule related to contingently convertible debt instruments. The combined fourth-quarter unfavorable impact of these items is expected to be $0.06 per share; therefore, including the impact of this pending legislation and anticipated accounting rule change, the company would expect fourth-quarter 2004 earnings of $0.84 to $0.85 per share.

Excluding these potential fourth quarter adjustments, full-year 2004 earnings are expected to be $3.74 to $3.75, an increase of more than 20 percent over 2003 and at the high end of a previous expectation in the range of $3.72 to $3.75 per share. Full-year earnings, including these potential adjustments, are expected to be $3.68 to $3.69. Management expects full-year sales volume growth of approximately 7 percent.

Patrick D. Campbell, senior vice president and chief financial officer, will conduct an investor teleconference at 9 a.m. Eastern Time (8 a.m. Central Time) today. Investors can access a webcast of this conference, along with related charts and materials, at http://investor.3M.com.

McDonald's: utile trimestrale in linea, ricavi superano consensus

McDonald's Profits Surge on U.S. Sales

CHICAGO, Oct 19, 2004 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- McDonald's Corp. rode strong U.S. sales to a 38 percent increase in third-quarter earnings, its fifth straight quarter of increased profits since snapping out of a slump last year.

Net earnings reported Tuesday for the three months ended Sept. 30 were $778 million, or 61 cents a share, up from $547 million, or 43 cents a share, for the same quarter in 2003. That matched the estimate it issued last Wednesday in disclosing that results would be better than Wall Street expected.

Revenues were up 9 percent to $4.9 billion from $4.5 billion a year earlier.

Since ending a protracted stretch of sluggish results in the crowded fast-food industry, the Oak Brook, Ill.-based chain has had six consecutive quarterly increases in same-store sales - restaurants open 13 months or more - among its 13,000-plus U.S. outlets.

CEO Charlie Bell attributed the momentum to McDonald's focus on better food and service, new menu items, longer restaurant hours and the recently added option for U.S. customers to pay for their meals with credit or debit cards.

For the first nine months, net income was $1.88 billion, or $1.48 per share, up from $1.05 billion, or $1.05 per share, a year earlier. Revenues jumped 12 percent to $14.1 billion from $12.6 billion.

Motorola Posts Higher 3Q Profit
Tuesday October 19, 4:14 pm ET

SCHAUMBERG, Ill. (AP) -- Motorola Inc., the second-largest maker of wireless handsets, said Tuesday that third-quarter earnings rose to beat Wall Street expectations on strong sales of new handset models.

Quarterly earnings increased to $479 million, or 20 cents per share, from $116 million, or 5 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue rose 26 percent to $8.62 billion from $6.83 billion last year.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call were looking for the company to post earnings of 19 cents per share on sales of $8.68 billion. In July, Motorola forecast third-quarter sales of 15 cents to 19 cents per share, on sales of $8.4 to $8.8 billion. This third-quarter earnings guidance excluded a portion of expected results of the companys semiconductor operations, due to the initial public offering of a 30 percent stake in Freescale Semiconductor Inc.

The company shipped 23.3 million handsets during the quarter, 15 percent more than a year ago.

Looking ahead, Motorola is forecasting fourth-quarter profits of 23 cents to 26 cents per share, on sales of $9.3 billion to $9.6 billion. Analysts are looking for earnings of 24 cents per share on sales of $9.52 billion.

Genzyme Posts Profit As Revenue Climbs

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct 20, 2004 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Genzyme Corp. Wednesday said it moved to a profit in the third quarter as revenue rose 30 percent.

Revenue in the latest quarter jumped to $569.2 million from $437 million, topping the $557 million projected by First Call.

6:50am 10/21/04 Schering-Plough reports Q3 profit vs. expected loss By Tomi Kilgore
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Schering-Plough (SGP: news, chart, profile) reported third-quarter earnings of $14 million, or a penny a share, vs. a loss of $265 million, or 18 cents a share in the same period a year ago. The results included a 1-cent per share charge related to employee severance. Revenue declined 1 percent to $2 billion, amid a 2 percent fall in prescription pharmaceutical sales. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had been expecting a loss of a penny a share and revenue of $1.94 billion, on average. Gross margin fell 3.3 percentage points to 64.1 percent due to lower production volumes and increased infrastructure spending. The drugmaker's stock closed Wednesday down 30 cents at $16.72.

7:14am 10/21/04 AT&T reports $7.1 billion loss By Jeffry Bartash
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- AT&T (T: news, chart, profile) on Thursday posted a $7.1 billion loss in the third quarter after the company wrote down the value of its traditional long-distance network and incurred a large onetime expense tied to the latest round of layoffs. For the third quarter, AT&T reported a net loss of $7.1 billion, or $8.95 a share, compared with income of $418 million, or 53 cents, a year ago. Sales fell 11.7 percent to $7.6 billion from a year earlier, though it was flat when compared to the prior second quarter. Excluding $12.5 billion in one-time charges, the company earned $593 million, or 75 cents a share. That figure included a 42-cent-a-share tax benefit.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had been expecting earnings of 71 cents a share and revenue of $5.93 billion, on average. Including the Vioxx withdrawal, Merck now expects earnings of 48 to 53 cents a share in the fourth quarter, vs. analyst forecasts of 35 cents, and earnings of $2.59 to $2.64 a share for 2004, vs. analyst projections of $2.58. Xerox: Trimestrale; Utile Netto Sale A 163 Milioni Dollari

AT&T, perdita terzo trimestre a 7,1 mld dlr causa svalutazioni

Nextel's Profit Rises, Ups Outlook

By Sinead Carew

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nextel Communications Inc., the sixth largest U.S. mobile company, on Friday said its third-quarter profit rose amid strong customer growth and it raised its earnings forecast for the full year.

The sixth biggest U.S. mobile provider raised its 2004 spending plans by 9 percent but it also lifted its earnings forecast for the year by 60 cents to $2.60.

"The numbers looked pretty good across the board," said SG Cowen analyst Jonathan Schildkraut. "The guidance was pretty encouraging."

Some investors could be put off by Nextel's plan to increase 2004 spending to $2.4 billion from its earlier plan to spend $2.2 billion, Schildkraut said. But it could make sense for Nextel to expand its network coverage to compete with bigger rivals such as Verizon Wireless, he said.

Reston, Virginia-based Nextel's profit rose to $586 million, or 53 cents per share from $346 million, or 33 cents per share a year earlier.

Excluding a 16 cent tax benefit and a 2 cent charge to pay down debt, its third-quarter profit was 39 cents per share. Revenue rose 18 percent to $3.4 billion from $2.89 billion a year ago.

Wall St. analysts on average expected earnings of 38 cents on revenue of $3.34 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.

Nextel added 550,000 net new subscribers in the quarter, compared with average estimates of 509,000 from seven analysts contacted by Reuters.

It ended the quarter with 14.5 million subscribers, and 800,000 customers at its Boost Mobile unit.

Nextel raised its outlook for 2004 customer additions saying it expects to add 2 million Nextel customers, up from its earlier forecast of 1.9 million and 650,000 Boost customers up from its earlier estimate of 500,000.

Average monthly revenue per customer was about $69, down from $71 a year earlier. Churn, or the percentage of customers canceling their service, was 1.5 percent compared with 1.4 percent a year earlier and 1.6 percent in the second quarter.

Its shares were down 27 cents at $25.00 in early trade on the Inet electronic brokerage system from Nasdaq a close of $25.27 on Thursday. The stock had risen as much as 13 cents to $25.50 on Inet earlier on Friday.
